Bricklayer Jobs Profile in Canada
A Bricklayer works as part of a group to lay bricks, pre-cut stone, concrete blocks or other types of building material in mortar as part of constructing and repairing walls, foundations, partitions, arches and other building structures.

Bricklayers require a strong degree of physical fitness as they will be working long hours outdoors, lifting and moving heavy materials. They may also be required to work at heights, underground, in tunnels and shafts. Bricklayers may be subcontracted by building and construction companies, and will generally be supervised by a Team Leader and Project Manager.

Common work duties undertaken by a Bricklayer include:

  • working from building plans and specifications
  • sealing foundations with damp-resistant materials
  • erecting scaffolding and constructing arches and ornamental brickwork
  • use various tools and machinery to cut and shape bricks
  • repair and maintain clay bricks, cement blocks and related structures

Bricklayers usually gain their entry into the occupation through an apprenticeship or traineeship where on-the-job training provides them with the necessary skills and knowledge to master the requirements of this trade, and to work within occupational health and safety guidelines.
