An Events Manager must be prepared to work atypical hours and to handle the pressure of deadlines and management of a diverse team of suppliers and support staff.

An Events Manager will rely on their strong communication skills, excellent organisational ability, relationship management skills, and their creative ability to conceptualise and strategise events that meet clients’ objectives and represent their brand positively.

Typical tasks for an Event Manager include:

  • meeting with clients to discuss objectives
  • establishing and nurturing relationships with suppliers and support staff
  • planning and supervising budges and timescales
  • researching venues, suppliers and contractors
  • making reservations at venues, discussing menus, interior styling and security
  • organising marketing and publicity for the event
  • organising invitations and supervising the guest list
  • ensuring occupational health and safety standards are followed

Events Managers may specialise in particular types of events, such as weddings, racing carnivals, fashion shows or trade shows.

Events Managers do not necessarily have qualifications in this area and may come from a business, administration, sales or public relations background for example. Qualifications and courses at various levels are recommended however, though on-the-job training is invaluable to progression in this fast-paced and exciting occupation.
