A Welder uses hand-welding or flame-cutting equipment to weld or join metal components, repair and build metal products.
Welder’s job duties include:
- use safety equipment and safe work practices while performing the job function
- welding components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions
- igniting welding torches or starting power supplies and strikes arcs by touching electrodes to metals being welded, completing electrical circuits
- detecting faulty operation of equipment or defective materials
- applying clamps, holds, tack-weld, heat-bending, grinding or bolting parts to obtain the correct positions for welding
- operating manual welding equipment to fuse metal segments, using techniques including gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, and flux-cored arc, plasma arc, and shielded metal arc, resistance welding, and submerged arc welding
- checking the fitting, burning, and welding processes to prevent overheating, warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of materials
- checking work pieces for defects and measures work pieces with straightedges or templates to ensure they meet specifications
- setting up and using hand and power tools such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment
- positioning, aligning, and securing parts and assemblies using straightedges, combination squares, callipers, and rulers
